From Centralised Grids to Distributed Solar: A New View on Energy Security

Traditional energy security thinking focused mainly on large power plants, fuel supply chains and transmission lines. While these elements remain important, they can also represent single points of failure.

Distributed solar – on rooftops, commercial sites and small community projects – adds many small sources of clean power closer to where people live and work. In combination with storage, this can keep critical loads running even if parts of the wider grid are disrupted.

Instead of replacing conventional energy security concepts, distributed solar adds a new layer of resilience – especially when combined with good planning, standards and maintenance.
